Odor problems at the Newmarket composting facility operated by Halton Recycling have caused York Region to decide it will send its food scraps and dirty diapers to Quebec beginning in July.

Markham will extend its green bin organics program town-wide starting July 4 and regional council has agreed to a six-month contract to send that waste to Sherbrooke company GSI Environmental Inc.

The region ships about 40 tonnes a week from one Markham area where the organics program was implemented on a trial basis. That waste was going to the Halton Recycling Plant in Newmarket but residents’ complaints put a stop to the shipments. The Town of Newmarket may take legal action against Halton and the Environment Ministry says the company was in violation of its certificate of approval.
