The United Nations (UN) World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD, also known as the Earth Summit) is being held in Johannesburg, South Africa from August 26 – September 4, 2002. The summit will bring together tens of thousands of government officials, non-governmental organizations, businesses and other civil society members from around the world to discuss the global environment and develop a plan for sustainable development.

The WSSD, the UN and the South African government are applying "Zero Waste" principles to the summit. The Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives and Earthlife Africa will lead the campaign to divert 90 per cent of the waste and to ensure that none is sent to incinerators.

The Canadian Environmental Network Forum Report for the WSSD, "Summit or Plummet?" includes a paper on IT equipment recycling by SW&R Editor Connie Vitello.
