Waste management trust funds awarded in Nfld.

Newfoundland and Labrador Minister of Environment Tom Osborne and Gordon Seabright, chair of the provincial Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB) awarded $55,553 for waste management initiatives through the Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund on December 22, 2003.

The waste management initiatives are as follows. The Heritage Foundation for Terra Nova National Park receives $14,200 to promote backyard composting and waste reduction in communities around Terra Nova National Park. The Local Service District of Sheppardville receives $3,000 to permanently close a dump site. The Greater Avalon Region Waste Management Committee and NorPen Waste Management Inc. receives $5,000 and $3,223, respectively, to implement a regional waste management education and awareness program. NorPen Waste Management Inc. was also awarded $20,836 to complete a study to select a waste disposal site in the Straits region. Finally, the Central Newfoundland Waste Management Committee receives $9,294 to study waste collection fee options for households in the region.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund provides financial assistance to help develop and implement waste management initiatives in Newfoundland and Labrador. The MMSB works with the regional waste management committees and communities, as well as other stakeholders to develop and implement new waste diversion programs for the province.
