Waste Management, Inc. (NYSE: WMI) announced on December 22 that its Recycle America Alliance, a majority-owned subsidiary and the largest collector of recyclables from businesses and households in North America, is a recipient of the National Recycling Coalition’s (NRC) 6th Annual "Recycling Works" Recognition Award. This award acknowledges organizations that have made a significant commitment to the conservation of natural resources through recycling.

"Waste Management, through its Recycle America Alliance, is demonstrating that waste reduction and recycling are more than just good business practices, they also provide business advantages as well," said Kate Krebs, NRC’s Executive Director. "We applaud Waste Management and Recycle America Alliance for its leadership, vision and commitment to proving that recycling really does work for American businesses."

The members of the National Recycling Coalition select the winners each year. Past winners include companies such as Aveda, Ford Motor Company, McDonalds, Verizon, Anheuser-Busch and Target.

Recycle America Alliance has approximately 2,700 employees; handles more than 8 million tons of commodities per year; operates 80 recycling plants and provides marketing responsibility for more than 190 Waste Management locations in the U.S. and Canada. In addition, RAA operates 11 container processing facilities, two plastics recycling facilities, and four electronics recycling facilities. Waste Management’s recycling business is the largest collector of recyclable materials from businesses and households in North America and operates material recovery facilities in the U.S. and Canada.

The National Recycling coalition, based in Washington D.C., is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the advancement and improvement of recycling, and also source reduction, composting and reuse, by providing technical information, education, training outreach and advocacy services to its member in order to conserve resources and benefit the environment.
