One year ago, Larry Stone and Rumpke Consolidated Companies, Inc. introduced the "Slow Down to Get Around" safety awareness campaign to the public. Now Stone is receiving the highest honors award from two leading associations in the refuse industry.
Stone accepted the Member of the Year award from the Environmental Industry Associations (EIA) and the National Solid Wastes Management Association (NSWMA) at the annual Inspirational & Awards Breakfast at Waste Expo in Las Vegas.
Using the slogan "Slow Down to Get Around," Stone, who is Rumpke’s director of safety, developed a multimedia awareness campaign in 2004, following two tragic incidents involving Rumpke employees. One employee’s life was lost, while another employee sustained multiple injuries and extensive brain damage. In both situations, the drivers were struck by vehicles while they were walking around their service trucks.
Through television, radio and print advertising, as well as highly-visible vehicle graphics, the public-awareness initiative is aimed at increasing the safety of refuse workers and other municipal employees who use service vehicles.
"The widespread success of the Slow Down to Get Around campaign has exceeded all of our original expectations," said Stone. "What began as Rumpke’s effort to increase public awareness locally has grown into a national campaign supported by sponsorships from the National Solid Wastes Management Association and McNeilus. It’s just been phenomenal."
Hundreds of other waste haulers, industry organizations, service companies and public safety groups have become involved. Nearly 200 municipalities nationwide, including Cincinnati, Dallas, New York City and Lexington, Ky., have either adopted or are in the process of adopting the campaign to prevent accidents involving their employees.
This year, Stone plans to develop new public service announcements for television and radio to promote the message and to work with more municipalities and sponsors in an effort to grow the program.
"We send our heartiest congratulations to Larry for receiving this prestigious award," said Mike Wuest of McNeilus Companies, Inc. "The Slow Down to Get Around campaign is a brilliant idea and one of the most important safety initiatives we’ve seen. It’s received outstanding support throughout the refuse industry and beyond. We’re proud to have played a role in supporting and promoting the program from its inception and will continue to do so."
Stone has been working at Rumpke for more than 30 years. Outside of Rumpke, he also has served as a police officer, department training officer, fire fighter, life squad member and EMT public education and training division member. crime prevention officer and public relations specialist.
