On March 12, 2003, The Composting Council of Canada announced that Starbucks retail stores are offering complimentary spent coffee grounds for gardens and compost bins. Starbucks "Grounds For Your Garden" program is a grassroots effort that began more than eight years ago. Spent coffee grounds are complimentary upon request at retail locations and are available year-round as they are generated. Grounds are packaged in reused whole bean coffee bags and sealed with a sticker.
The Composting Council of Canada aims to help reduce reduce the amount of waste going to landfills while promoting composting product use.
According to gardening expert and best-selling author Mark Cullen, coffee grounds can be composted and turned into an important soil amendment for the garden. Coffee grounds can be applied directly to a garden’s acid loving plants such as azaleas, roses or hydrangeas. The acidity of the grounds can be countered with leaves and dried grass.
