The former Onyx entities — the waste management business of Veolia — are now known as Veolia Environmental Services. The company has a strong presence in North America where it’s known for (among other things) industrial cleaning, waste management and landfill gas-to-energy projects.
Veolia Environmental Services is the only operator working with local authorities and private companies that covers all segments of the waste market (solid, liquid, non-hazardous industrial and hazardous waste). With a presence all along the supply chain, Veolia Environmental Services provides waste management and logistics services (e.g., waste collection, sewer, street cleaning and waste flow management services) and processes or treats waste to extract value. In contract news, Veolia Environmental Services has started a five-year contract with the city of Abu Dhabi to manage cleaning services for its downtown area for a total amount of 42 million revenues over the term.
The contract covers new bins distribution, household and non-hazardous industrial waste collection, cleaning and sweeping streets, public areas, beach and islands cleaning services. In addition to regular services, Veolia will provide “on demand” clean-up actions. To meet the specific local requirements of the city of Abu Dhabi, Veolia Environmental Services has developed a fleet of 48 customized vehicles, including:
side-loading waste collection vehicles run by a single operator in an air-conditioned cab;
industrial waste collection trucks for bulky waste collection;
washing bins trucks;
light vehicles to collect Islamic writings and basket bins;
Mechanical sweeping and washing trucks;
Specific cleaning vehicles.
Abu Dhabi, which has a total population of one million and is among the most modern cities in the world. Under its new contract, Veolia Environmental Services will collect an average of 160,000 tonnes of waste a year for 250,000 habitants. NOTE: Veolia Environmental Services operates in Abu Dhabi via Onyx Gulf, a joint venture of Veolia Propret (49%), Al Jaber Transport and General Contracting (39%) and Saif Group (12%).
