Municipal waste-to-energy plants that incinerate more than 250 tons of waste per day may see the rules under which they operate change. The U.S. EPA is proposing amendments that would simplify the implementation of its New Source Performance Standards and Emissions Guidelines, yet still require large municipal WTE plants to operate at high performance high levels. Since their introduction in 1995, the guidelines have reduced emissions of dioxin and furan by more than 99 percent. Heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium, and lead have been reduced by more than 93 percent, and sulfur dioxide and hydrogen chloride are down by more than 91 percent.
