This year, Toronto Mayor Miller is asking all Torontonians at work, school or at home to stop what you’re doing at 2:00pm on Friday, April 23, come outside and do a 20-minute clean-up blitz around your office, school or neighbourhood. Think how quickly we could clean the City with just a small amount of time and individual effort!

What is the 20-Minute Toronto Makeover all about?

As a complementary event to the regular Saturday Clean-up Day, we hope the 20-Minute Toronto Makeover will become a new tradition. On Friday, April 23, 2004, Mayor Miller will ask all Torontonians at work, at school or at home to stop what they’re doing at 2:00pm, come outside, and do a 20-minute clean-up blitz around their office, school or neighbourhood. Think how quickly we could clean the city with just a small amount of time and a small amount of individual effort.

How do I participate in the 20-Minute Toronto Makeover?

Mayor Miller is making an appeal to businesses and schools to allow employees and students to leave the building for 20-Minutes at 2:00 to do a clean-up blitz on and around their property. Please work with your supervisor, colleagues, teacher or fellow students to plan your participation, and then call to register:

Toronto, East York, York, Etobicoke: call 392-7899
Scarborough, North York: 416-392-7913

Why do I have to register?

Other than actually getting out there and cleaning up, registering is the most important thing you can do to be part of the 20-Minute Toronto Makeover. When you register, two important things happen:

a. The City makes sure you receive the appropriate number of specially-colored bags for your group. (Bags available only while supplies last, so call early.)
b. City garbage collection crews will know where to go to pick up the garbage your group collects.

What information do I need to give when I call to register?
You will need:

Contact name and number
Location of clean-up
Name of group (use your own name if you wish)
Number of participants (necessary to organize the specially-colored bags and plan for appropriate pile of garbage)
Staff will call you back to arrange the exact location where the City’s collection crew will pick up your specially-colored bags.

If you are participating in the 20-Minute Toronto Makeover at home, please add the litter you pick up to your garbage and set it out on your regularly scheduled collection day. Please note that your household bag limits still apply.

ALSO: Saturday, April 24 is Mayor Miller’s Community Clean-up Day for our city. What better way to begin the new season than to pick up litter in a public space in your neighbourhood!

Get together with friends, co-workers and neighbours to clean up an alley or park in your community. Let’s build on last year’s success and make an even bigger mark this year.

Call to register — Please register before April 16
Call to register your volunteer group early so we can arrange to collect your bags of garbage on Saturday, April 24. If you live in:

Toronto, East York, York, Etobicoke: call 416-392-7899.
Scarborough, North York: call 416-392-7913

It’s very important to register for this event. That way, City staff will advise you where to leave your bags for collection.

How do I join an existing group that’s already been started?

If you want to join an existing group, very soon we’ll post a list of registered groups to give you the option of joining one of them.

How do I organize a group of volunteers?

If you want to start your own group, decide what area you want to clean and then call to register.

Why do I have to register?

Other than actually getting out there and cleaning up, registering is the most important thing you can do to be part of this one-day event. When you register, two important things happen:

a. The City makes sure you receive the appropriate number of garbage bags for your group. (Bags available only while supplies last, so call early.)
b. City garbage collection crews will know where to go to pick up the garbage your group collects on Saturday, April 24.

What information do I need to give when I call to register?
You will need:

Contact name and number
General location of clean-up (e.g. Thompson Park)
Name of group (use your own name if you wish)
Number of participants (necessary to organize bags and plan for appropriate pile of garbage)
Finish time (when you think you’ll be done)
Staff will call you back to arrange the exact location where the City’s collection crew will pick up your bags.
Will garbage bags and gloves be available?

Bags only will be available, while supplies last. The City will not provide gloves. When you register, you will need to provide a contact name and number in order to receive the bags for your group. When you pick up the bags, you may be required to sign that you have received them. Participants are responsible for wearing appropriate and protective clothing (boots, gloves, etc).

Where do we put the waste when we are finished cleaning up our area?

Waste must be easily accessible to the City’s collection trucks by the road. Please leave your bags where the City staff instructed. Please don’t leave your bags of garbage in the park or ravine, or on a footpath.

What about recycling? (cans, glass, plastic bottles & newspaper)

The City does not have the resources on Community Clean-up Day to collect recyclables. However, if you are willing to separate recyclables from the garbage you collect, you and your volunteers could place the recyclables in your blue or grey box for collection on your regularly scheduled collection day. You don’t have to do that, but if you choose to, we would certainly appreciate your extra effort to recycle.

What time will the event be held?

That is for you and your volunteer group to decide – except for one constraint. The City intends to complete collection of all Community Clean-up Day garbage bags on that same day; therefore, your bags of waste should be placed at the determined collection location no later than by 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 24.

If you know that your group will be finished earlier (e.g. noon or 1:00), we can schedule the truck to clean the area up sooner. Please make sure you mention this when registering.

How many people participate in this event?

This is Toronto’s seventh Community Clean-up Day. Last year more than 5,500 people–that’s more than 200 groups–joined forces to clean up our public spaces.
