SARCAN Recycling, operated by Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management and the Saskatchewan Association of Rehabilitation Centres (SARC), recycled 2,178,193,920 beverage containers as of March 31, 2002. If placed end to end, these containers would circle the earth an estimated 12 times.
The containers represent a diversion of 107,191,000 kg from the waste stream and the desposit refunds paid on these containers amounts to $199,304,920. The value of the materials recycled annually is $3.8-million.
Saskatchewan’s deposit-return program boasts one of the highest recovery rates in North America — 81.3 per cent — and is almost entirely operated by disabled individuals at more than 71 depots.
