Ron Brecher appointed to Ontario water advisory council
Ontario Environment Minister Leona Dombrowsky has appointed Dr. Ronald Brecher of Guelph to the province’s new Advisory Council on Drinking Water Quality and Testing Standards.
The 15-member advisory council will make recommendations to the minister to ensure that Ontario’s drinking water standards and testing are consistent with the most up-to-date scientific information, and that the standards-setting process is transparent with increased public input. The council’s mandate includes a review of scientific and technical documentation of proposed standards, public consultation, and recommendations for adopting water quality standards not currently being considered through the federal-provincial-territorial process for developing Canadian drinking water guidelines.
Through the advisory council, the Ontario government will implement recommendations made by Justice Dennis O’Connor in the Walkerton Inquiry report.
"I’m honoured to have been invited by the minister to join this distinguished team of professionals," said Brecher on his appointment. "The Walkerton tragedy has drawn attention to water quality management issues throughout the country. The formation of this advisory council is an important step forward in serving the public interest in Ontario."
