Logan Lake is circulating a flyer that includes the ballot question: "Are you in favour of holding a referendum on the issue of a landfill?" Officials say that 149 responses have been received, with 123 in favour and 26 opposed to such a referendum.
The town has also received a response from Highland Valley Copper Environmental Services Superintendent Mark Freberg who wrote: "I understand that the district has recently received a number of form letters concerning the proposed Solid Waste Management Centre at the mine site. The form letter contains statements about the proposal that are both misleading and factually incorrect."
One raised the issue that an abattoir proposed for the HVC property could not go ahead if the landfill were to be located there. Council agreed to find out if this information is correct.
Highland Valley has been proposed as an alternative long-term disposal site for waste from the Greater Vancouver Regional District, which is currently considering development of a mega-facility at the so-called Ashcroft Ranch property.
