The Ontario Waste Management Association (OWMA) reminds waste management industry professionals of its Preferred Management Practice, PMP003, which concerns heat stress.

With recent high temperatures, it’s an appropriate time to remind all OWMA members and waste managers of the need to be aware of heat stress and the OWMA waste industry standard.

During the summer months, workers (inside and outside) in the waste management industry can face dangerously high temperatures in their workplace. Unless a waste management facility utilizes processes and equipment that generate heat, worker exposure is usually related to weather and climatic conditions. Excessive heat exposure may result in workers developing heat-related illnesses.

The OWMA heat stress guideline is re-posted on the OWMA website (for members only). The guideline is a Preferred Management Practice document that describes the regulatory requirements related to the issue, the practice in the industry and the preferred practices that minimize risks to the health and safety of workers.
