Onyx — the waste management division of Veolia Environnement — has been awarded a three-year contract by the Alcatel group for the integrated management of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). Onyx will take care of the collection, dismantling, processing, recovery and recycling of WEEE from the sites of Alcatel and its clients in 27 countries in Europe (all EU Member States as well as Norway and Switzerland).
The contract comes under the framework of the European directive on WEEE, which has been adapted to the national laws of almost all EU Member States, including France (decree no. 2005-829 of July 20, 2005). The directive makes manufacturers, distributors and owners of electrical and electronic equipment responsible for its collection and treatment at end of life.
Denis Gasquet, CEO of Onyx, said, "This integrated contract combines responsibilities for the logistics associated with WEEE as well as for its treatment and recycling. The contract is a confirmation that Onyx has a highly suitable offer for this complex European market that is undergoing expansion."
Georges Gruyelle, head of industry and logistics for Alcatel, said, "The contract lets Alcatel benefit from Onyx’s worldwide expertise in managing WEEE. This specialist know-how is indispensable because of the complexity of the technical and regulatory requirements, which are based on the national laws of 25 different countries. It also allows us to put our environmental commitments into practice."
Onyx has been operating in the market for managing WEEE for 15 years, working through its European network with such major international clients as IBM, Nortel, Nokia, Siemens and Thales.
Onyx, Veolia Environnement’s waste management division, is the only operator that provides solid, liquid, non-hazardous and hazardous waste management solutions to both local communities and industry. Its 71,000 employees in 34 countries provide waste management and logistics services, including collection, wastewater management, cleaning and flow control, and treatment and recovery of waste. Onyx posted sales of 6.2 billion euros in 2004.
