Brick Brewery of Waterloo, Ontario has recently become the first Canadian brewer to package beer in a plastic bottle. This new alternative is expected to be more appealing to partygoers because it is lightweight, durable and isn’t a broken glass hazard.
The packaging is made of recycled plastic and has a multi-layer design to keep CO2 inside the bottle. It’s recyclable and will carry the same 10-cent refundable deposit as a 12-oz. glass bottle.
While the new bottles may result in greater sales of Brick’s Yellow Label lager, some say it’s a step backward in terms of waste management for the brewer, which had previously only offered its products in refillable bottles and kegs. The beer in the plastic bottle will be available in more Beer and LCBO stores in southern Ontario.
