Office Depot has agreed to take part in an Electronic Recycling Association of Alberta (ERA) initiative to collect thousands of old laptops and computers from residents and businesses in Calgary.

Collected computers will be tested and refurbished by the ERA, and donated to local communities groups and abroad. Any computers that are donated but can not be used will be recycled using government certified processors.

The biggest obstacles to date for many residents and businesses have been confidentiality concerns. ERA uses RCMP certified software Blancco to erase confidential information at the request of the client. The files can never be recovered.

Some of the other retailers participating include The Brick, Acrodex, Memory Express, MDG and Laptop Depot.

A complete list of drop-off locations can be found at www.era.ca.
