Pictou County’s solid waste department experienced a significant increase in compost and recycling in January because of the use of clear bags in its collection program. Almost 62 tonnes of compost was collected in January, compared to the 37 tonnes collected in December. Recycling also increased, with 80 tonnes of recycling, up from almost 55 tonnes the month before. The amount of garbage collected decreased to a total of 62.5 tonnes, compared to 81 tonnes in January. The county credits the change to the introduction of new clear bags, which took effect on January 3. Residents can only put out one of the traditional black or green garbage bags, and all other waste must be put in clear bags.
