The Western Climate Initiative (WCI) has released a work plan for the design of a regional cap-and-trade program.
The WCI is a collaboration of seven U.S. governors and four Canadian premiers to identify, evaluate, and implement collective and cooperative ways to reduce greenhouse gases in the region.
Its proposed emissions reduction program would cover nearly 90 per cent of the region’s emissions, including those from electricity and industries like cement plants, natural gas production, and mining.
The cap-and-trade program has been recommended to start January 1, 2012.
The 2009-2010 Work Plan is a living document that will evolve over 2009 as committees make progress on their tasks.
The WCI invites stakeholders to participate in a conference call it is holding on February 26, 2009 about the next steps.
Stakeholders can also comment on the 2009-2010 Work Plan through the WCI’s website
