The Chicago Climate Exchange — a greenhouse gas (GHG) registry, reduction and trading system — and the Montreal Exchange (Canada’s financial derivatives exchange) recently announced a joint venture to be named the Montreal Climate Exchange (MCX). Starting in the second half of 2006, the MCX will trade carbon dioxide futures for credits as part of the Kyoto Protocol. The MCX will also trade offset credits in greenhouse gas reductions achieved by green programs such as burning methane from landfills and plowing carbon-containing agricultural waste back into the soil.
