Grants totaling $366,890 from Manitoba’s Waste Reduction and Pollution Prevention (WRAPP) Fund have been awarded to 25 projects across the province.

Among them is a $24,900 grant to establish an environmentally friendly way of managing the growing volume of school computer waste to be undertaken by Computers for Schools Manitoba. Other projects funded include: the Marquis project, providing $24,000 to support research and education of the economic benefits of composting and recycling to the industrial, commercial and institutional sector in Brandon; $25,000 to set up a composting system for organic wastes generated by restaurants at Manitoba Lotteries Corporation’s casinos; and two grants of $25,000 and $50,000 to support environmental information and education programs delivered by Resource Conservation Manitoba.

WRAPP grants are also supporting research projects at the University of Manitoba. The Department of Biosystems engineering is researching composting methods for livestock producers (with a $25,000 grant), while the Civil Engineering department has been provided $20,000 to demonstrate the installation of extraction wells in landfills to remove excess leachate runoff and better protect groundwater, surface water and soil.

The WRAPP Fund supports improved waste reduction and pollution prevention practices in Manitoba. Priority areas are organic waste management and composting, construction and demolition waste management, pollution prevention, and model-integrated waste management system development and planning. Since its creation in 2000, the Fund has supported 147 projects with a combined value of more than $2.4 million.
