Make a note to attend the free “MSW Options Workshop: Integrating Organics Management and Residual Disposal/Treatment” February 23, 2006 in Toronto, Ontario and in Calgary on March 2, 2006.
Across Canada, many communities have been working hard to implement the 3Rs. The Municipal Waste Integration Network (mwin) together with the Recycling Council of Alberta (RCA), with support from Natural Resources Canada and Environment Canada, have developed this workshop as a means to provide municipalities with information on additional tools to advance their waste management programs. The focus of the workshop is to assist municipalities with taking their integrated waste management systems to “the next level” in order to further conserve resources, reduce environmental impacts, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, produce energy, lessen dependence on landfills, and improve social acceptability.
The purpose of the workshop is to share information on leading edge, non-traditional residual municipal solid waste (MSW) options (including consideration of environmental impacts, energy recovery, greenhouse gas emissions, social and environmental impacts).
The agenda consists primarily of an opening plenary followed by four in depth technical presentations of the following organics and residuals management options by experts in:
Landfill (sanitary and enhanced landfill)
These technical sessions will provide an overview discussion of:
how each technology works,
the specific technology options,
the key issues and variables associated with each technology,
a snap shot of current use and the expected future application of the technology,
an evaluation according to environmental, energy recovery, GHG, and impacts
current barriers to further use.
A closing plenary will address barriers and potential next steps. Web links to the full report and presentations will be made available. A final agenda will be presented at the workshop however a preliminary agenda can be found below.
