On January 15, 2003, Environmental Waste International Inc. (EWI) of Ajax, Ontario completed the first commercial sale of its Reverse Polymerization Tire Processing Plant. EWI reduction system TR3000 was sold to a private UK company. The unit is designed to process 3,000 tires per day or about one million tires per year.

EWI received a deposit of $1-million against a purchase price of $10-million. It will take an estimated 18 months to complete the design, building and installation of the plant.

The patented EWI system employs microwave energy to break down and separate tires into carbon black, oil, steel and hydrocarbon gases. According to EWI, the system significantly reduces atmospheric emissions and because it is a major improvement over incineration it can participate in carbon credit and emissions trading.
