When Keith Bohac was named the Environmental Industry Association’s (EIA) 2004 Driver of the Year in the Small Commercial category, his employer, Republic Waste Services, offered to reward him with a brand new front loader.
"Make it a Heil body on a Mack chassis, or I’ll just keep the one I’ve got," he replied.
So in the fall, Bohac and Kevin Walbridge, Republic regional vice president, flew to Heil Environmental’s manufacturing facility in Fort Payne, Alabama. In a ceremony at the plant, Bohac accepted the keys to a new Heil Half/Pack front loader decked out with chrome wheels and a custom paint job featuring his name on the door.
"Heil really does build the best truck," said Bohac, who has driven refuse collection vehicles for 26 years without a reportable accident or injury. "I like Heil because of its dependability. Heil trucks are really solid and hold up well. And their controls are very driver-friendly."
EIA describes its Drivers of the Year as "the very best in the industry." They are selected on the basis of their job performance and recommendations. Bohac’s route is in Detroit, Michigan. He drives an average of 750 miles per week with 600 stops. In addition to his driving responsibilities, he also serves other drivers as union steward.
"Keith truly cares about what he does and puts his heart into it. He cares about his customers, the company, and his coworkers, which makes him a really positive person for everyone to be with," Walbridge says. "The key to Republic is our people. We have some of the best people in the industry. And at the end of the day, it’s the people driving the trucks who make the difference. So it’s nice when we get these opportunities to recognize some of the unsung heroes like Keith."
Jim Rogers, Heil vice president of North American sales, agreed. "At Heil, we understand that the wheels on Republic’s trucks have to turn every day. Our job is to help make that happen by providing drivers such as Keith with the equipment that enables them to do their jobs safely and efficiently, year after year."
