The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) announced on July 30, 2004 that it has published a new regulatory document, Regulatory Policy P-290, Managing Environmental Waste.

The policy describes the principles that the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) will take into account when making regulatory decisions that concern the management of radioactive waste. The policy expresses the CNSC’s commitment to consulting and cooperating with other national and international agencies to promote consistent national and international standards for radioactive wastes, and to achieve conformity with measures of control and international obligations to which Canada has agreed with respect to radioactive waste.

The CNSC issued Draft Regulatory Policy P-290, Managing Environmental Waste, for public comment in April 2003. The comments received have been taken into account during finalization of the document. These comments are subject to the federal Access to Information Act.
