On January 16, 2003, the Ontario Ministry of Environment announced that 2R Services Inc. of Barrie, Ontario was fined $25,000 after pleading guilty to two charges related to a vapour discharge from its waste transfer station. The discharge occurred on January 15, 2001, when an employee poured organic liquid into a 45-gallon drum containing nitric acid. The vapour plume affected workers at a nearby bottling plant, resulting in difficulty breathing, sore throats, swollen eyes, and headaches.
2R Services was fined $20,000 for contravening section 14(1) of the Environmental Protection Act, involving the discharge of a contamination that was likely to cause an adverse effect, and $5,000 for failing to notify the ministry.
