The B.C. Ministry of Environment has taken safety precautions after the discovery of mislabeled waste containers at a storage facility in Abbotsford. Ministry staff, along with an environmental consultant, have been at the location since August 22 to assess and clean up the site. When containers with potentially explosive materials were discovered, the ministry temporarily moved employees from the site. There is no immediate danger to the public from the site, which is located at 33790 Industrial Avenue, Abbotsford, BC.

Staff are proceeding with caution in order to handle the material in the safest manner possible. The Abbotsford fire department is on stand-by. Adjacent businesses have been made aware of the situation. The public will be notified of any changes to the situation. Environment Minister Barry Penner has signed a Declaration of Environmental Emergency under the Environmental Management Act. This allows the province to gain access to the necessary resources to address the issue.
