Bertz Design Group of Middletown, Connecticut, has been recognized by Mohawk Fine Papers Inc. for its sustainability initiatives.

Bertz Design Group’s recent work for Constellation Brands has earned them the Mohawk Windpower Partnership Award. This award was presented for the company’s efforts towards more sustainable practices. Bertz Design recently chose Mohawk Via 100 per cent PC Cool White paper from Mohawk’s environmental portfolio for use in Constellation Brands’ 2007 annual report.

“We are proud to present this award for a second time to Bertz Design. Their continued choice of Mohawk’s environmental papers shows their own commitment to sustainability as well their contribution to educating their clients in making sound environmental choices,” says Joseph O’Connor, Sr. Vice President Sales, Corporate Accounts.

The difference Bertz Design has made is significant, as evidenced by the environmental calculations below, which quantify their decision to use Mohawk Via, made with electricity generated by renewable wind power.

Environmental savings achieved by Bertz Design use of 54,000 pounds of Mohawk Via 100 per cent PC Cool White:

Savings derived from using post-consumer recycled fibre in lieu of virgin fiber:

518 trees preserved for future use

1,496 lbs. waterborne waste not created

24,365 lbs. solid waste not generated

220,203 gallons water/wastewater flow saved

367,200,000 BTUs energy not consumed

47,974 lbs. net greenhouse gases prevented

24,926 lbs. air emissions not generated

1,685 trees planted

10 barrels crude oil unused

Currently, 100 per cent of the electricity used by Mohawk Fine Papers is offset with certified wind power certificates. “Continuing to offer our customers the most environmentally conscientious papers will remain the highest priority for Mohawk,” says O’Connor.

The Mohawk Windpower Partnership Award was launched nationally in 2006. This is one of many programs launched by Mohawk to raise awareness for corporate sustainability issues. A pioneer on the recycled paper front, in 2003, Mohawk became the first paper mill in the U.S. to use renewable, non-polluting wind energy for manufacturing and the first U.S. mill to offset the thermal energy emissions associated with the production of select paper brands, thus effectively making the paper carbon neutral.

Mohawk’s environmental calculator is another industry first: this online, interactive tool enables customers to calculate the savings achieved when they choose environmentally friendly paper. Mohawk is also the first U.S. paper mill to offer Green Seal-certified papers and continues to offer the widest variety of Green Seal-certified papers available from one mill. Finally, Mohawk received the EPA’s Green Power Leadership Partner of the Year Award in October of 2007.
