A government agency in the Maritimes is helping a local company purchase state-of-the art recycling equipment.

The Atlantic Canada Opportunity Agency (ACOA) will provide a repayable financial contribution of $310,000 to Tire Recycling Atlantic Canada Corporation (TRACC) based in Minto, New Brunswick, for the purchase of a rasper.

The machine is a new type of granulator and will be only one of two of its kind in Canada. The equipment is capable of processing larger truck tires and removing the wire for resale – a process that had been challenging with the company’s former equipment.

TRACC collects and processes more than 800,000 used passenger tires from around New Brunswick and grinds them into rubber crumb, which is then recycled into useable product. To date, the company’s most successful product is its livestock mat. TRACC’s research and development department is currently considering other products including rubber mats, imitation patio blocks, rubber roof shingles and noise suppression material.

The ACOA Business Development Program was created to provide repayable financial assistance to small and medium-sized companies to help them establish, expand and modernize their operations.
