A revolutionary lightweight aluminum bottle that has just started being used commercially by a leading US soft drinks producer won the Can of the Year Award for Exal Corporation at The Canmaker Summit held in Dubai (October 28-29).

The 30cl C2C bottle has been under development by US-based Exal for almost ten years and compared the impact-extruded aluminum bottles already on the market and produced in limited numbers weighs more than 40 per cent less, providing significant material savings.

Delfin Gibert, chief executive of Exal Corporation, based in Youngstown, Ohio, USA, said: “Truly I didn’t expect this but I am glad because I feel this is the future. It is the fulfillment of a dream I’ve had for ten years.”

Exal is also a leading manufacturer of aluminum aerosol cans, and is planning major investments in bottle production capacity to meet the increasing demands of its customer, which has yet to officially announce the launch of the C2C bottle for its products.

C2C, which stands for Coil-to-Can, uses similar techniques as for making drinks cans, starting with thin aluminum coil, and potentially offers production speeds in the region of 1,000 bottles per minute. Development costs in excess of $30 million have been spent on a pilot manufacturing line in Ohio with capacity to make 120 million bottles a year. The C2C bottle that won the Can of the Year Award was made for Eaux Vives mineral water in Canada.

The C2C bottle also won the Gold award in the Bottles category. Other Gold winners were Toyo Seikan (Japan), Aerosol Cans; Safet (France), Beverage Three-piece; Pacific Can (China), Beverage Two-piece; Crown Speciality Packaging Europe (France), Decoration & Print Quality, Fancy Cans; Impress Metal Packaging (The Netherlands), Ends, Caps & Closures, Food Three-piece, Prototype; GDC Embalagens (Brazil), Food Two-piece; Brasilata (Brazil); General Line Cans.
