Alberta Environment recently released a draft waste action plan that outlines its proposed approach to waste reduction in Alberta. The ministry introduced the Action on Waste Program in 1991 and waste reduction efforts by the government, municipalities, industry and public resulted in a 28 per cent reduction in waste going to municipal landfills in 2000.

Goals of the currently proposed action plan include: to establish a policy and legislative framework that will shape waste diversion and management systems to 2010; to achieve regional integrated waste management; to ensure stewardship programs are established for priority waste streams; and, to eliminate all household hazardous waste from municipal landfills by 2010.

The Recycling Council of Alberta is soliciting feedback from its membership on this plan prior to formulating its final input to Alberta Environment. Comments should be forwarded to info@recycle.ab.ca prior to October 31, 2002.
