SWANA Waste Management Certification Courses for the Solid Waste Professional

This spring SWANA is presenting three, 3-day certification courses April 27 to 29, 2009, with an opportunity to write the CHALLENGE EXAM on Thursday April 30, 2009. The 3 courses being offered are:
~Household Hazardous Waste Facilities Management
~Managing Composting Operations
~Principles of Management of MSW Systems
1) HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE FACILITY OPERATION
The SWANA Household Hazardous Waste Facility Operation course teaches how to identify and avoid chemical, operational, fire and health hazards, and how to provide proper protection. Issues reviewed include regulatory matters, types of potential emergencies, and appropriate response plans. Operators will learn how to receive, store, label, pack, transport, dispose and monitor hazardous materials.
Note: SWANA is in the process of completing the CERTIFICATION component of the HHW Facilities Management course and the Certification exam will be available to write sometime in 2009.
2) MANAGING COMPOSTING OPERATIONS
In this prep course for the Composting Certification exam, issued jointly by SWANA and the U.S. Composting Council (USCC), professionals who manage or would like to manage composting programs will be exposed to the various opportunities for composting agricultural and industrial waste. This course will enable you to turn your program into a successful and cost effective operation by gaining an understanding in both the composting of materials and the full range of technologies involved in planning, designing and operating composts.
3) PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT OF MSW SYSTEMS
Solid waste professionals in or hoping to move into a managerial position can help advance their career in leadership roles and responsibilities for multi-component solid waste systems. This is a helpful prep course for the MSW Systems Management Certification exam. Understand the basics of developing solid waste systems along with management theory and its implications. You will become familiar with managing financial and human resources to make sound management decisions. Also you will discuss the vital roles of ethics, leadership and the importance of building public consent and media relations
The courses are being held at the Barrie Holiday Inn adjacent to Highway 400 in Barrie. The Hotel has set aside a block of rooms for the Training Week at a special rate of $119.00 per night. The Composting and Household Hazardous Waste courses will be going on a site tour relating to the course material. Please bring appropriate clothing and safety footwear.
Students are requested to bring a calculator to assist with any mathematica
l problems in the course and exam.
