The Ontario Chapter of the Solid Waste Management Association of North America (SWANA) offers its Spring series of waste management certification courses for the solid waste professional.
SWANA is presenting three, 3-day certification courses April 7 to 9, 2008, with an opportunity to write the CHALLENGE EXAM on Thursday April 10, 2007.

~Managing MSW Recycling Systems
~Managing Composting Operations
~Principles of Management of MSW Systems
1) MANAGING MSW RECYCLING SYSTEMS Mon. Apr 7 to Wed. Apr 9
This prep course for the Recycling Certification exam will help you to understand the marketing tools of recyclables in order to simplify your system and maximize your revenues. Recognize the issues that need to be considered when planning, designing and managing waste reduction, recycling and composting systems. Receive hands on instruction and learn about “reduce, reuse and recycle” strategies and initiatives that pertain to municipal waste. Use these tactical methods to apply to and improve your program. In addition, grasp the key concepts of marketing recyclables and explore the basics of system costs, funding and ownership/operation decisions that increase revenue.
2) MANAGING COMPOSTING OPERATIONS Mon. Apr 7 to Wed. Apr 9
In this prep course for the Composting Certification exam, issued jointly by SWANA and the U.S. Composting Council (USCC), professionals who manage or would like to manage composting programs will be exposed to the various opportunities for composting agricultural and industrial waste. This course will enable you to turn your program into a successful and cost effective operation by gaining an understanding in both the composting of materials and the full range of technologies involved in planning, designing and operating composts.
3) PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT OF MSW SYSTEMS Apr 7 to Apr 9
Solid waste professionals in or hoping to move into a managerial position can help advance their career in leadership roles and responsibilities for multi-component solid waste systems. This is a helpful prep course for the MSW Systems Management Certification exam. Understand the basics of developing solid waste systems along with management theory and its implications. You will become familiar with managing financial and human resources to make sound management decisions. Also you will discuss the vital roles of ethics, leadership and the importance of building public consent and media relations
The courses are being held at the Hamilton Convention Centre, 1 Summers Lane, Hamilton, ON, L8P 4Y2. The convention centre is right downtown, adjacent to the Eaton Centre and Copps Coliseum.
The course hotel is the Staybridge Suites Hotel, 118 Market St, Hamilton, ON, L8R 3P9, phone 905-577-9000. This hotel is a short block from the Convention Centre.
The Hotel has set aside a block of rooms for the Training Week at a special rate of $109.00 per night. Students are to make their own arrangements with Staybridge Suites by phoning 905-577-9000. Identify yourself as attending the SWANA — Ontario Chapter training week.
The Composting and Recycling Courses will be going on a site tour relating to the course material. Please bring appropriate clothing and safety footwear.
Students are requested to bring a calculator to assist with any mathematical problems in the course and exam.
