HALIFAX – The Halifax city council has approved the cost of buying sideguards for its garbage trucks.
The Halifax Chronicle Herald reported that councillors unanimously approved the sideguards that protect pedestrians from sliding underneath waste collection trucks. They disagreed, however, on whether the municipality should pay for installation on private contractors’ equipment.
The cost is estimated to be approximately $238k to equip both the city’s 16 condo collection and 83 curbside collection trucks.
City staff had recommended the sideguards, and say that contractors had been requested to come up with the most cost-effective solutions.
Staff also expect that the cost will be accommodated through the existing solid waste budget.
