Last week, at its annual conference in Niagara Falls, Ontario, the Municipal Waste Integration Network (MWIN) announced that Randall Roy from the City of Sault Ste. Marie is this year’s winner of the Waste Management Professional of the Year.
Under Roy’s management, the City of Sault Ste Marie has substantially increased the diversion of materials from landfill through a much improved blue box program and processor for the materials. His goal is to preserve valuable landfill space by diverting as much as economically and environmentally possible. The life of the landfill is actually increasing as his programs take hold.
Said MWIN: “Randy typifies a WIMPY candidate as he takes his energy and commitment to diversion far beyond a regular days work by meeting with his local industry, high school students and local charitable groups to build partnerships for diversion that recognize and reflect the fact that environmental programs need to be driven by the community as a whole. Randy is a leader, facilitator and a cheer leader of these actions through his positive and engaging approach to solid waste issues.”
