In early February production began at Premium Pellet Ltd., a new $6-million wood fuel facility in Vanderhoof, British Columbia. A joint venture with Avison Management Services and L&M Lumber will generate 50,000 tonnes of refined, pelletized, wood residues this year. Using only clean white wood waste, and a system that dries, refines and densifies, the system produces 12 gigajoules of net energy from one cubic metre of fuel. Wood pellet fuel has been used for several years for commercial and residential heating systems as well as for thermal electrical generation. Use is increasing sharply as more consumers opt for wood pellet furnaces to offset high-energy costs for fossil fuels. The wood pellets are sold bagged and palletized for truck shipment or in bulk.
