In celebration of 15 years of waste reduction efforts, Ontario communities, schools and businesses participated in various events during the first week of November. Ontario Environment Minister Tony Clement and Education Minister Janet Ecker kicked off Waste Reduction Week ’99 on November 1 at the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto. Joined by students from four environmentally exemplary Ontario schools, Clement and Ecker launched the new Recycling Council of Ontario EcoSchools Waste Reduction Recognition Program. The program, supported by Canada Trust Friends of the Environment, will help schools reduce waste by assessing their current initiatives and promoting new ideas. Top “EcoSchools” will be honoured with $1,500 awards from Alcan Aluminium.
