On March 16 friends and colleagues of industry mover and shaker Wally Wells gathered to recognize his years of service to the industry and his recent retirement from Dillon consulting. The evening at the Holiday Inn in Etobicoke included an amusing “roast” from industry friends such as Don Coates and Angelos Bacopoulos, and also presentation of several awards.

Wells received an award from the Municipal Waste Integration Network (mWIN) presented by member Arthur Potts, who also served as a gracious master of ceremonies. An award was also given along with a large banner from the Canadian Public Works Association, for which Wells will now become executive director, in addition to sitting on the boards of other organizations.

The Ontario Waste Management Association (OWMA) awarded Wells the OWMA Award of Excellence — Builder Award. This a was instituted to recognize individuals who have had a significant impact on our industry and the association. Past winners have included Bob McCaig (Green Lane Environmental), Jim Temple (Waste Management of Canada Inc. — retired), Don Hemmerle (Big Bear Services — retired) and Don Coates (Muskoka Containerized Services and Capital Environmental Resources).
