A conference of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) is coming to Canada thanks in part to the efforts of British Columbia-based Coast Waste Management Association. The biannual International Children’s Conference on the Environment (ICC) brings approximately one thousand children and adult escorts to discuss environmental concerns and teach each other about regional and global environmental issues. Canada will be the first country in the Western Hemisphere to host the conference, to be chaired by Anne Mathewson of Tetra Pak Canada. UNEP ICC began in 1995 and has been held in England and Kenya. UNEP chose the Canadian bid after a visit and tour of Victoria in January, followed by a reception with an address from Federal Minister of Environment David Anderson.
