The Recycling Council of Alberta (RCA) held its annual waste reduction conference at the beautiful and environmentally-conscious Fairmont Hotel Macdonald in Edmonton, September 20-22. The conference kicked off with a golf tournament, tours and a communications workshop. This year’s event featured a strong lineup of speakers, including Ralph Torrie, Jerry Powell, Deron Beal and Dr. Paul Connett, who discussed a wide range of topics from zero waste to climate change. Using a new format (plenary sessions only) produced a remarkable energy and sense of cohesion among delegates, who were educated, entertained and enlightened over the three days of lively sessions, outrageous entertainment and quality networking opportunities.

As always, delegates enjoyed the social events for which the RCA is famous, culminating in the Star Wars banquet where a wide selection of aliens and science fiction heroes wined and dined prior to exercising their funny bones courtesy of hilarious comedian Rick Bronson. Conference organizers also worked hard to “walk the talk” with organic and locally-grown food choices, electronic-only promotional materials, and recycled conference materials, in addition to choosing Edmonton’s highest eco-rated hotel.

The RCA’s next conference will be held September 26-28 at the Fairmont Palliser Hotel in Calgary. Visitwww.recycle.ab.ca
