Murray Gale, president of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) — Ontario Chapter, has announced the appointment of John Lackie, P. Eng., as executive director of the Ontario Chapter. John brings to the position more than 25 years of experience in the public and private sectors of the solid waste industry in Ontario, including 14 years with the City of Barrie, and six years consulting for Tetra Pak Canada Inc. Active in the SWANA Ontario Chapter since 1987, John has held the position of Secretary Treasurer of the Chapter for 11 years and has been the international director for the Chapter since 2000. He has organized and conducted numerous SWANA training courses throughout Ontario, and currently represents all four Canadian Chapters as the Canadian Representative to the International Board and Executive Committee of SWANA.
“SWANA Ontario Chapter’s focus over the next several years is going to be on enhancing the delivery of solid waste management training programs in Ontario,” said Gale. “SWANA is the leading professional association in North America in developing solid waste training and certification programs, starting with their Manager of Landfill Operations (MOLO) course in the mid 1980s.”
In fact, SWANA Ontario Chapter and the Ontario Waste Management Association (OWMA) are collaborating to present a Landfill Symposium this fall. According to the organizers, the two-day event will be held at the end of October and will be tied in with several days of accredited SWANA MOLO training in various technical aspects of landfill management, starting earlier in the week. Details will be forthcoming, but mark your calendars: Landfill Symposium, Thursday, October 26 to Friday, October 27, 2006, Four Points Sheraton (3530 Schmon Parkway, St. Catharines, Ontario).
