Prime Minister Paul Martin announced a new cabinet on Tuesday, July 20, appointing Stphane Dion to the position of environment minister. He replaces long-serving former Environment Minister David Anderson who said, “Needless to say, I am disappointed that I will not be returning to the cabinet. That said, I look back with satisfaction to my work over the past ten-and-a-half years.”

Mr. Dion is the Member of Parliament for Saint-Laurent — Cartierville. He has Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in political science from Laval University and a Doctorate in Sociology from the Institut d’tudes politiques in Paris. Mr. Dion played an important role in bringing about the 1999 Social Union Framework Agreement. From 2001 to 2003 he was the mMnister responsible for Official Languages. He is the author of the Action Plan for Official Languages.
