Fort Lauderdale, Florida-based Republic Services Inc. is expanding its business in Canada as Waste Management Inc. strengthens its large presence. In early August the City of Toronto hired Republic Services of Canada to handle commercial waste disposal services beginning next year as the city closes the Keele Valley Landfill in Vaughan, Ontario by December 31, 2002. That deal could reach $400-million in revenue. (Republic’s initial contract is for five years that officials can extend in two-, three- and five-year increments.) Waste Management’s Rail*Cycle* North will assume ownership of all residential waste disposal at its Adams Mine Landfill near Kirkland Lake, Ontario on January 1, 2003. The company expects to generate as much as $760-million during the 20-year contract.
