The RCA 2000 Annual Conference and General Meeting took place in Lake Louise from October 18-20. The event kicked off with tours of the Town of Banff recycling program and the Chateau Lake Louise environmental program. A workshop was presented by Dr. Fred Edgecombe (EPIC) and Kristina Gray (City of Calgary), to demonstrate the use of the EPIC/CSR Integrated Waste Management/Life-Cycle Analysis Computer Model.
The morning of October 19 saw some snow on the ground but the sun finally came out to illuminate the glacier. The beautiful lake view greeted delegates for the morning sessions. RCA President Lyle Hoffman and Minister of Alberta Environment Halvar Jonson welcomed their audience, which promptly got underway with informative sessions and a keynote address by SWR Editor-in-Chief Guy Crittenden. (For a copy of the speech, see www.solidwastemag.com.) After a full day of sessions and the AGM, delegates gathered for the Crown Packaging “Blues Night” banquet and dance. The last day wrapped up with sessions about composting, new issues in recycling and Russian recycling markets.
