The Recycling Council of Ontario held its 22nd Annual Concerence and AGM, “The Power of One — Leading the Revolution” on October 9-11 at the Hamilton Convention Centre in Ontario. Attendees were provided interesting sessions by Dr. Thomas Homer-Dixon and Ralph Torrie on resource and environmental challenges. Another session raised important issues about electronic products recycling.

In the opening plenary, Ontario Minister of Environment Elizabeth Witmer reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the new Waste Diversion Act. It was standing room only for a lively panel on the practicalities of achieving zero waste, and a session about Ontario’s Waste Diversion Organization.

Major sponsors included Alcan Aluminum Corp., Dofasco Inc., and Environment Canada and exhibitors included The Clorox Company of Canada Ltd., Earth Tech Canada Inc., and Tetra Pak Canada Inc..

At the AGM, new board members were announced: Joe Hruska, vice president of market development for CSR: Corporations Supporting Recycling; Clarissa Morawski, principal of CM Consulting and frequent contributor to Solid Waste & Recycling magazine; and, Doug Symington, president of WDS Associates. (Also see announcement on page 55.)
