The 2002 Recycling Council of Ontario conference, annual general meeting and exhibit, entitled, “Evolving Better Practices,” was held on September 25-27 at the Ramada Inn on the Bay in Belleville, Ontario. About 200 guests attended informative sessions about benchmarking efficiency and effectiveness for sustainability, emerging product stewardship programs, organics recovery, litter programs, and much more.
Tremendous interest was generated at the event by lively sessions concerning the new Waste Diversion Ontario and the much-anticipated WDO workshop, “Maximizing Funding Through Best Practices,” which shed some light on what to expect as a result of the passage of Ontario Bill 90. (See articles, page 4 and 62.) Using the participating municipalities as working examples, the workshop explored how adding new materials or investing in increasing capture rates can help pay for itself. A lively question and answer period followed the workshop.
Attendees also enjoyed a very well received corn roast dinner at a nearby golf club with lively music from the popular local band Slow Poke. It was great to see everyone “let their hair down” and interact in a casual way either on the dance floor or around the campfire after a day of intensive policy and implementation discussions.
