The Recycling Council of Ontario’s 16th Annual Ontario Waste Minimization Awards took place at the Markham Theatre on April 17. The Earth Week ceremony honoured businesses, municipal governments, schools, individuals and other organizations for their outstanding waste reduction efforts. RCO Executive Director John Hanson said, “When these awards were first presented in 1984, a handful of municipalities were diverting 10 per cent of their waste. Today many divert 40, 50 and even 60 per cent.” SW&R Editor-in-Chief Guy Crittenden was a finalist for the Outstanding Environmental News Story award for both “Hot-Wiring Strathroy” and “Ontario Scrap Tire Fiasco.” The winner of the award is Daniel Scott, author of “Redeeming the Blue Box,” which appeared in Alternatives Journal Fall 1999.
