Special lids boost recycling and brand awareness
Chevy Lane Fabrications of Niagara Falls, Ontario designs and supplies unique recycling solutions for programs in public areas. While interest in residential recycling has risen dramatically over the years, recycling in public areas such as parks and arenas needs fresh ideas.
Chevy Lane’s research and involvement in this area has shown that the main reason for the lack of public space programs is the impression that their difficult to organize and implement, and there’s a lack of affordable or suitable containers.
One solution is to better utilize the 45-gallon drums that many open-space facilities already use as their waste containers (either metal or plastic). These containers are readily available and inexpensive. The company has designed a lid to fit these containers made from 16 ga steel with a durable powder coat finish and clear, concise, highly-visible decals that identify the acceptable materials.
A clear plastic bag would typically line the drum; the lid identifies the drum as a recycling receptacle, holds the bag in place and deters animals from entry. By placing the lid on a container, a program is in place!
The use of clear bags makes it easy to empty and spot contamination. They work with any process or equipment currently used to empty existing waste containers or with minimal co-ordination and set up. The lid can be tethered to the container with a simple cable/cord/chain (or any available material) to prevent theft.
When manufactured in quantity, the lids can be very inexpensive. The decals are a durable outdoor vinyl with UV inks and UV overlaminate. Decals in use for five years or longer have held up extremely well. If a program changes, so can the decal, making them very versatile.
Chevy Lane is looking for “sponsors” (associations, businesses, organizations) interested in helping jump-start recycling programs in these areas by helping to offset the initial costs of lids in exchange for their name/logo appearing on the decals. The company will pair up areas interested in starting a program with appropriate sponsors.
