The spirit of cooperation and competition is positively displayed as the industry embarks on a new initiative designed to promote the value of compost for crop growth and production. The first annual pumpkin-growing contest is being championed by Miller Composting, Visions of Utopia and The Composting Council of Canada. The contest is focused on growing the largest, heaviest pumpkin using compost.

In addition to annual bragging rights, the winner will receive a cash prize for donation to a horticultural initiative in their area. The program’s appeal has been picked up internationally and will also be championed through the US Composting Council.

The weigh-in is scheduled for Monday, October 1, 2002. Each participant must phone in their results to The Council’s office (1-877-571-GROW) followed by a fax report and photo, signed by a local municipal official or horticultural group for verification.
