The Recycling Council of Ontario (RCO) has unveiled Take Back the Light — a new program with the goal of recycling 30 million fluorescent lamps disposed of yearly by Ontario’s businesses and institutions, ten times more than today’s efforts. By doing so, almost one tonne (913 kilograms) of potentially toxic mercury lamps will be properly collected and recycled. Only seven per cent of fluorescent lamps are currently recycled in the province. The Ontario Government is the first participant; over the next four years, more than 3,500 Ontario Government buildings will be participating in the program.
