On March 14, 2002, the class-action lawsuit by residents of Hamilton, Ontario who lived or worked near the hazardous Plastimet Inc. fire in July 1997 came to a close. Judge David Crane endorsed payment to more than 3,000 residents of $175 each. The four-day blaze covered the area in a toxic plume that many experts say warranted an evacuation. Approximately 400 tonnes of plastic burned in the collapsed 80,000 square foot Plastimet plastics recycling facility.
